Silverware is the term for cutlery (flatware) items such as knives, forks, and spoons. Silverware can also include serving cutlery, serving plates, salvers (trays) and serving bowls that are made from silver (ideally sterling silver) or silver plate.
The beauty of silverware is the wide variety of items that are collectable. For example, you may find items made for a very specific purpose such as a spoon designed especially for stuffing meat such as a turkey, pouring jugs with spout on either side (perfect for left handed users), knife rests, skewers, and even grape shears (for cutting grape stalks)!
Different countries have different definitions of what is regarded as ‘fine’ silverware. To be useful in making silverware items, silver must be combined with copper to create sterling silver. Different ratios of copper to silver results in different qualities such as strength and softness.
The most popular collectable silver is hallmarked English sterling silver which has a .925 silver content.
If you’re shopping as an investment you should do some research into quality vintage, antique or collectable brands and/or manufacturers and what they’re worth. You often find a stamped number or name on the back of silverware. An item stamped EP, NS, PLATE, or EPNS means it is made from Electroplated Nickel Silver.
